Safety Guidance for Obstacle Racing

Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is an exciting sport that contains a range of challenges for participants. To ensure you have the best experience possible, we have prepared some key preparation, safety, and post-race recovery tips.

Event Preparation

  • Check Your Fitness: Ensure you are medically fit to participate. Seek medical advice if needed.
  • Choose the Right Wave: Some events offer ability-based waves, while others stagger start times to prevent overcrowding. Select a wave suited to your fitness level and allow ample time to finish before cut-off times.
  • Know the Rules: Review the obstacle rule book, course maps, and any event guidelines before race day.
  • Sign Required Waivers: Complete all required paperwork before arrival.
  • Medical Considerations: Inform the event organiser of any pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities that may require adaptations.
  • Gear Up: Check for any mandatory or recommended equipment. Some events require specific gear for safety and performance.
  • Plan Your Journey: Arrive early to allow time for parking, bag drop, and safety briefings. Car sharing is advised as this will often save money, reduce traffic, and help the environment.
  • Insurance Coverage: British Obstacle Sports membership includes basic personal accident insurance for certain events and training. Review the policy details, including any exclusions.

Participant Safety

  • Attend Safety Briefings: Many events hold mandatory briefings—arrive on time and listen carefully.
  • Use Warm-Up Areas: Some events provide dedicated spaces for warm-ups—take advantage of them.
  • Hydration & Nutrition: While some races offer water and nutrition stations, it’s best to carry your own, especially if you have dietary needs.
  • Spectator Guidelines: If bringing supporters, ensure they have proper tickets, know designated viewing areas, and check if food and drink are available on-site.
  • Locate Medical Stations: Familiarise yourself with first aid points and emergency procedures.

Weather & Environmental Considerations

  • Dress Appropriately: Weather can be unpredictable, especially in exposed locations. Wear appropriate gear such as sunscreen, waterproof layers, or neoprene for cold conditions.
  • Choose Proper Footwear: Terrain can be uneven and slippery—wear shoes suited to the conditions for grip and stability.

Obstacle Safety

  • Follow Instructions: Read all posted safety guidelines and attend briefings on obstacle completion.
  • Respect Event Officials: Marshals and British Obstacle Sports Technical Officials provide crucial safety guidance—follow their instructions.
  • Check for Warnings: Some obstacles have specific safety signs—read and follow them carefully.

Post-Event Recovery

  • Change into Dry Clothes: Expect to get wet and muddy—bring weather-appropriate spare clothing, including dry socks and footwear.
  • Hydrate & Refuel: Replenish fluids and consume necessary nutrition post-race to aid recovery.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a safe, fun, and successful OCR experience. See you on the course.
